How to find the version of your Ubuntu machine?

At times, you may across a situation where you need to know the version of Ubuntu to carry on with installing some applications. There are two ways to find out the version of Ubuntu running on your machine.

Method A:
[root@user Desktop]# cat /etc/issue

Sample Result:
Ubuntu 8.04.1 \n \l

Method B:
[root@user Desktop]# lsb_release -a

Sample Result:

No LSB modules are available.
Distributor ID: Ubuntu
Description: Ubuntu 8.04.1
Release: 8.04
Codename: hardy

How to find the version of CentOS running in your machine?

The following commands can be executed to find the version of CentOS running in your machine.

Command 1:
# cat /etc/issue

Command 2:
# cat /etc/redhat-release
