Top 10 Free Video Editors for Ubuntu Linux

Today I’m going to write about some of the best Video editing tools for Ubuntu Linux because Linux itself doesn’t offer any default or built-in video editor application but there are tens of third party software for Linux you can use to add effects to your videos and do a lot more. On the top of my head I have


AvideMUX is one of the most widely used Video application for Ubuntu Linux. It allows you to easily cut, filter and encode your tasks. It supports all the major video formats including AVI, DVD compatible MPEGfiles, MP4 and ASF, using a variety of codecs.


These tasks can be automated using projects, job queue and powerful scripting capabilities. Avidemux is available for Linux, BSD, Mac OS X and Microsoft Windows under the GNU GPL license.

CinePaint is an easy to use Ubuntu Video application that has a support for 8-bit, 16-bit and 32-bit color channels of deep paint. It offers High Dynamic Range that allows images to go brighter than white.


It is often used to retouch feature films and in pro photography. It can also be used for motion picture for frame-by-frame retouching, dirt removal, wire rig removal, render repair, background plates, and painting 3D model textures.



A Video editor and compositor for Ubuntu Linux that offers 3 major features including capturing, compositing,  and editing audio and video with sample level accuracy.

Kino features excellent integration with IEEE-1394 for capturing videos, VTR control and recording back to the camera. It allows you to load multiple video clips, cut and paste portions of video/audio, and save it to an edit decision list.

Also, Kino can export the composite movie in a number of formats: DV over IEEE 1394, Raw DV, DV AVI, still frames, WAV, MP3, Ogg Vorbis, MPEG-1, MPEG-2, and MPEG-4. Still frame import and export uses gdk-pixbuf, which has support for BMG, GIF, JPEG, PNG, PPM, SVG, Targa, TIFF, and XPM. MP3 requires lame. Ogg Vorbis requires oggenc. MPEG-1 and MPEG-2 require mjpegtools or ffmpeg. MPEG-4 requires ffmpeg.

Vivia is a video editing program for Linux and Windows that offers very user-friendly editing of DV video materia. It allows you to arrange your clips for your movie using TimeLine feature. ou can add a clip to your movie by dragging a file from the Files window onto the Timeline. You can edit a clip directly on the Timeline with the tools that appear when a clip is selected.

KDEnlive is a free open source video editor for Linux that is also available for various desktop managers in Linux. It supports a wide variety of file formats, as well as a wide range of camcorders and cameras.


Just like LiVES, it allows multitrack editing of unlimited video and audio tracks.

FFmpeg is another open source video editor for Linux that allows you to record, convert and stream audio and video. FFmped is a command line tool that is composed of a collection of open-source libraries. With these sets of libraries, one can easily record, convert and stream digital audio/video in numerous formats.
