CheckGmail is an excellent open source alternative Gmail Notifier for Linux which is not only fast and secure but it also uses the minimal bandwidth via the use of Atom feeds. Google Notifier is also available for Windows and Mac but Checkgmail gives Linux users a heads up by offering some expanded functionality.
Just like any other Email notifier, it sits on your desktop and notifies you whenever you receive a new email. You get the option to open, mark as read, archive or delete it from your Gmail.
Each message can be opened directly in a browser window, and many common Gmail operations can be carried out on messages directly within CheckGmail, without the need to use the Gmail web interface.
